What is Keyword Intent?

Keyword intent (or search intent) is the goal behind a query: to learn, to compare, to buy, or to do something. Classifying intent helps you create content that matches what users and AI are looking for, improving rankings and citations.

Common Intent Types

Informational – “what is X,” “how to Y,” “why Z.” User wants an answer or explanation. Best served by articles, guides, and FAQ content. Commercial – “best X for Y,” “X vs Z.” User is researching before a decision. Comparison and review content fit. Transactional – “buy X,” “sign up for Y.” User is ready to act. Product and pricing pages fit. Navigational – “X login,” “Y pricing.” User wants a specific site or page.

Using Intent for SEO and AEO

Map keywords to intent (manual review or SERP/competitor analysis). Create or update content that fulfills that intent: direct answers and definitions for informational, comparisons for commercial, clear CTAs for transactional. For AEO, informational and definitional content is especially useful because AI often surfaces answers to “what/how/why” questions.

Refining Over Time

Check SERPs and AI answers for your target queries; if results are mostly one intent (e.g. all guides), align your content. Update classification as search behavior and AI answers evolve.
